Second Life

Second life is a virtual world technology that allows users to interact with each other as in a real world setting (Wikipedia, 2010). It lets people get real world experiences in society through communication with each other on the levels of personal and business aspects. Second life is considered to be a disruptive technology. Second life allows for people to be very creative and use their higher level thinking skills in making decisions that will benefit them. It’s in a social atmosphere and can promote collaboration.

“Disruptive technology is a new technology with the same function as an existing technology that functions more efficiently and obsoletes that technology” (Laureate Education, 2009). I really think that there are various different forms of virtual world’s simulations/gaming systems that may have been replaced by Second Life because of its sophistication. As technology advances rapidly, I really think that Second Life may be replaced within the next five years.

  1. I agree with you that Second Life will be replaced soon. I feel that it will be adapted to use in other applications, such as Facebook.

  2. Hi Carol,
You presented some interesting comments on Second Life. As Rosedale stated, Second Life or similar applications, will be used in the future as learning tools, because you will be able to see, handle, and manipulate objects in the virtual world, instead of just seeing or reading about them in books or online.

Some schools are currently using online labs that allow students to change the parameters of experiments and see the results. It is not far fetched to see that software merged with Second Life type software, allowing the student to experience the lab in 3D, including sound and it will not be long before smell will be added, so we can really enjoy those chemistry experiments we loved so much. :-)

  3. Hi Carol,
Great post. I too believe that at some point Second Life will be replaced as well and sooner than we probably estimate, especially with the way gaming systems such as the Wii, are advancing and evolving each year.
